The President of the Nigeria Tennis Federation and former Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Victor Ochei, has paid glowing tribute to former Deputy Governor of Delta State, Sir Benjamin Elue, who passed away at the age of 85.
In an emotional tribute, Ochei described the late elder statesman as a pillar of stability, a bridge-builder, and a committed democrat whose impact on Delta State’s political evolution remains indelible.
Sir Benjamin Elue, a respected son of Obior in Aniocha North Local Government Area, served as Deputy Governor of Delta State from 1999 to 2007 alongside former Governor James Onanefe Ibori. His tenure coincided with the formative years of the state’s democratic journey in the Fourth Republic.
Reflecting on his passing, Ochei noted that Elue’s calm disposition and steadfast loyalty helped stabilize governance during a critical period in Delta State’s history.
“Sir Benjamin Elue was not just a political leader; he was a pillar of stability in Delta State. His calm disposition, loyalty to the state, and unwavering commitment to service defined an era of purposeful leadership,” Ochei stated.
He emphasized that the late deputy governor played a strategic and steadying role in government, bringing administrative discipline, grassroots connection, and a deep understanding of governance to bear on state affairs.
Ochei further described Elue as a unifying force in Delta North, saying he nurtured younger leaders and ensured the district maintained a strong and respected voice in the political landscape of the state.
“In Delta North, Sir Benjamin was a bridge-builder. He united interests, mentored emerging leaders, and ensured that our constituency had a strong voice in the affairs of the state. His impact was quiet but far-reaching,” he added.
According to Ochei, Elue believed leadership was about substance rather than spectacle. Throughout his years in public service, he remained deeply rooted in his community, strengthening party structures and fostering political harmony across Delta North.
Paying personal tribute, Ochei said he drew inspiration from Elue’s humility and statesmanship.
“As a fellow son of Delta North, I drew inspiration from his statesmanship and humility. He taught us that public office is a sacred trust, and he carried that trust with honor. His passing marks the end of an era, but his legacy will continue to guide us,” he said.
Sir Benjamin Elue’s passing marks the departure of one of Delta State’s foundational political figures in the Fourth Republic.
He leaves behind a legacy of sacrifice, loyalty, and unwavering dedication to public service, as well as generations of leaders who benefitted from his guidance and counsel.
On behalf of his family and the entire Delta North political family, Ochei extended heartfelt condolences to Elue’s immediate family, the people of Obior, Aniocha North Local Government Area, and the entire Delta State.
He prayed for God to grant the departed elder statesman eternal rest and comfort all who mourn him.
“Farewell, Sir. Your service to Delta North and Delta State will forever remain etched in our history,” Ochei concluded.
