The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has dismissed candidate lists circulating on social media for elections in Imo, Abia, Anambra and other affected states, describing them as fake, unauthorized and not issued by the party.
The party said it had already submitted its authentic list of candidates to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) through the channels prescribed by the Electoral Act and warned members of the public against relying on unofficial documents being circulated online.
The clarification was contained in a statement issued on Friday by the National Secretary of the party, Barrister Ikenna Enekweizu.
According to the statement, the lists making the rounds on various social media platforms did not originate from the party’s national headquarters and should be disregarded completely.
The NDC said the circulation of the lists appeared to be a deliberate attempt to create confusion and undermine confidence in the party’s internal processes.
“The general public, especially members of the NDC in Imo, Abia, Anambra and other affected states, are hereby urged to disregard the lists of candidates widely circulating on social media as the authentic lists of our party’s candidates from the aforementioned states,” the statement read.
“The said lists are fake and did not emanate from the party headquarters.”
The party explained that it had fulfilled its statutory obligations by forwarding the names of its duly nominated candidates to INEC through the appropriate procedures recognized by law.
“Our party has since submitted the lists of authentic candidates that will fly our party’s flag to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, using the appropriate channel as approved by the Electoral Act,” the statement added.
The NDC alleged that those responsible for circulating the unofficial lists were individuals seeking to cause division and distract the party from its objectives.
It described the development as an act of mischief aimed at creating unnecessary controversy and uncertainty among party members and supporters.
“Such lists in circulation are being peddled by mischief makers and those who do not wish the party well,” Enekweizu stated.
The party further disclosed that it had commenced investigations to identify the sources of the fabricated documents and determine how they found their way into the public domain.
According to the statement, the circulation of false information regarding candidates represents a desperate effort to create distrust within the party and disrupt its preparations for upcoming elections.
“However, the party is investigating the sources of such fabrications and leaks, as they are desperate attempts to sow ill will and create distractions within the party,” the statement said.
The NDC reassured its members that the leadership remains committed to transparency, internal democracy and the broader mission of building a political platform capable of addressing Nigeria’s challenges.
The party emphasized that its focus remains on strengthening its structures and mobilising support ahead of future electoral contests.
It also called on party faithful to remain united and avoid being influenced by unofficial information circulating online.
The statement concluded by reaffirming the party’s commitment to providing what it described as a credible vehicle for national transformation.
“This is to reassure our members that the NDC is robustly committed to building a party that would serve as a vehicle to liberate Nigeria from its present parlous state with the cooperation of everyone,” the statement added.
