The National Association of University Students (NAUS) Headquarters has taken a significant step towards enhancing the safety of students by initiating a strategic partnership with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to promote road safety awareness across Nigerian tertiary institutions.
The initiative followed a courtesy visit by the Office of the Deputy National President, National and Campus Affairs, to the FRSC FCT Sector Command Headquarters in Abuja.
According to a statement signed by the Deputy National President, National and Campus Affairs, Comrade Joseph Yenax Olamilekan, the NAUS delegation was received by the FCT Sector Commander, Corps Commander T.
Iliyasu, where both parties held discussions on fostering collaboration to reduce road traffic crashes involving university students.
The meeting focused on developing joint programmes that would empower student leaders to spearhead road safety campaigns, educate their peers on responsible road use and support the FRSC’s efforts to create safer campuses and highways nationwide.
The proposed partnership also aims to institutionalise road safety advocacy within universities by leveraging student unions and campus leadership structures to drive behavioural change among students.
Speaking on the initiative, Olamilekan said the engagement underscores NAUS Headquarters’ commitment to protecting the lives of Nigerian university students through strategic partnerships that promote safety, responsible leadership and national development.
He expressed optimism that the collaboration with the FRSC would foster a culture of road safety consciousness among students while contributing to efforts aimed at reducing accidents across the country’s roads.
The partnership is expected to pave the way for sustained road safety education and awareness programmes in universities, with student leaders playing a central role in promoting safer road use within and outside their campuses.
