NASENI Driving New Era In Public Sector Through Innovation, Inter-Agency Partnership

Economic growth and development of a nation is unarguably tied to her local production capability and usage of such products because it brings about job creation, development of industries and raw materials, increased revenue generation and improved Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Premised on the above understanding is what is driving the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) to be at the forefront of driving innovations geared towards industrialisation and national economic growth through its Development Institutes spread across Nigeria’s six geo-political zones. In this report CYRIL OGAR, writes on toward industrialisation and home grown technology solutions.

Nigeria’s drive toward industrialisation and home grown technology solutions has taken a bold and timely leap forward as the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) launched an Inter-Agency Innovation Competition for Federal Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

A nationwide innovation competition designed to identify, fund, and scale high-impact Nigerian innovations in science, technology, engineering, and manufacturing.
The initiative signals a clear shift from routine governance to solution-driven collaboration, where creativity, local expertise and practical problem-solving take centre stage within the public service.

The competition invites young Nigerians with practical ideas or prototypes to compete for a share of a ₦140 million prize pool, alongside mentorship, visibility, and access to innovation ecosystem support. The initiative aligns with NASENI’s broader mandate to strengthen Nigeria’s industrial capacity and promote home grown technological solutions.

NASENI Inter-Agency Innovation Competition committee had embark on a roadshow in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja to mobilise staff of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) of the federal government to actively participate in the upcoming Inter-Agency Innovation Competition and Awards.

The Innovate Naija Challenge serves as a national platform for transforming promising ideas into commercially viable and scalable solutions. Through competitive grants, public engagement, and structured evaluation, the programme supports innovators from concept stage through to national recognition.

The challenge is linked to the NASENI Innovation Hub initiative, which focuses on bridging gaps in infrastructure, skills development, and funding across Nigeria’s science and technology ecosystem.

NASENI’s inter-agency collaboration is driving Nigeria’s industrialization, job creation, and self-reliance by pooling resources, fostering innovation (like the Inter-Agency Innovation Competition), and developing local solutions in tech, defense, and agriculture, reducing import dependency and boosting national economic growth through shared goals and combined expertise.

Key benefits include spurring technological advancement, improving public services, creating local industries, and ensuring more competitive Nigerian products globally.

This is coming at a time when national development increasingly depends on innovation, NASENI’s decision to challenge MDAs to think differently could not be more strategic.

Rather than relying on imported fixes or fragmented interventions, the competition encourages agencies to identify problems within their mandates and develop workable, technology-based solutions using local capacity. In doing so, NASENI is reinforcing a powerful message: innovation must start from within.

Importantly, this initiative moves beyond theory. It creates a structured platform where ideas translate into prototypes, processes evolve into systems, and inter-agency rivalry transforms into productive collaboration.

As MDAs prepare to participate, the emphasis is not on abstract concepts but on solutions that improve service delivery, reduce costs, and strengthen institutional efficiency across government.

Furthermore, the competition reflects NASENI’s broader mandate to drive Nigeria’s industrial and technological growth. Over the years, the agency has consistently positioned itself as a catalyst for applied research, engineering development and local manufacturing. This new programme builds on that legacy by extending innovation ownership to the wider public sector. Consequently, innovation no longer sits at the margins; it becomes part of everyday governance.

Equally significant is the socio-economic dimension of the competition. By promoting local solutions, NASENI is helping to stimulate domestic industries, support Nigerian innovators, and reduce dependence on foreign technologies. As ideas mature into deployable solutions, opportunities emerge for local production, job creation and skills development. In effect, the public sector becomes a launch pad for broader economic impact.

In addition, the inter-agency structure encourages knowledge sharing across MDAs that often operate in silos. Through collaboration, agencies can pool expertise, learn from each other’s experiences and adapt successful ideas across sectors. This approach not only accelerates innovation but also fosters a culture of continuous improvement within government institutions.

The competition also aligns closely with the Federal Government’s industrialisation agenda and its push for efficiency, accountability and value for money. By incentivising innovation internally, government resources achieve greater impact while public confidence in state institutions strengthens.

Citizens ultimately benefit from improved services, smarter systems and policies informed by practical solutions rather than bureaucratic inertia.

Moreover, NASENI’s leadership in this initiative demonstrates the growing role of science, engineering and technology in national planning. Innovation, in this context, is not a buzzword. It is a working tool for governance, development and competitiveness in a fast-changing global environment. Through this competition, NASENI is effectively mainstreaming innovation as a core function of the Nigerian public service.

As the programme unfolds, expectations remain high. However, the foundation appears solid. Clear objectives, institutional backing and a results-oriented framework position the competition for success.

More importantly, it sends a strong signal that Nigeria is ready to harness the intellectual capital within its public institutions to solve national challenges.

In the final analysis, NASENI’s Inter-Agency Innovation Competition represents more than an event.

It marks a mind-set shift. It affirms that progress emerges when ideas meet opportunity, when institutions embrace creativity, and when local solutions receive national support.

Through this initiative, NASENI once again reinforces its role as a driving force behind Nigeria’s journey toward sustainable industrial growth, technological advancement and inclusive development.

The Chairman, Inter-Agency Innovation Competition Assessment and Award committee and Director, Manufacturing Services at NASENI, Engr. Dr Olasupo Olayode, who spoke shortly after the exercise, stressing that the competition specifically targets staff of Federal MDAs who have lots of innovative ideas which can be turned into solutions that can address national challenges.

He noted that NASENI is committed to promoting indigenous technology and innovation as a strategic means of reducing excessive importation and strengthening local content development, saying “there are lots of potential in the federal government staff and NASENI will not like them to retire without their talents being harnessed.

“Together, we can unlock our nation’s potential through innovation in science, engineering and technology. Join the movement by submitting entry”, he said, adding that the Federal Government through its Renewed Hope Agenda is serious about harnessing talents to build a modern and industrialized Nigeria.

In order to display the essence of the event, an application portal https://naseni.gov.ng/innovation/ is currently open to receive applications, and qualified applicants stand to benefit from a ₦140 million grant earmarked for the initiative.

Judging by the unwavering ambition of the NASENI boss to move Nigeria to the next level, he has offered enormous support and reaffirmed the Agency’s resolve to intensify efforts in research, innovation, collaboration and commercialisation of technology to drive Nigeria’s industrialisation agenda.

Federal ministries and agencies visited during the advocacy exercise included the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment; the Ministry of Interior; the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA); the Federal Ministry of Health; and the Federal Ministry of Education, among others.

This specific initiative amongst the MDAs seeks to harness innovative ideas that can drive technological advancement and address pressing challenges facing the nation amongst public servants.

The MDAs staff are expected to propose innovative solutions in various sectors, including health, agriculture, education, and infrastructure, leveraging science and technology to enhance public service delivery and improve the quality of life for Nigerians.

The spirit of the competition is already high among the federal MDAs and it will surely be an event to express their energy, talents, innovation and productivity to benefit the country.

The focus under the NASENI CEO is on home-grown innovations as pivotal paths to Nigerian’s yearning for industrial development as NASENI seeks innovative solutions that would support its 3Cs framework to ensure that the innovativeness and talents in staff are not wasted, and that all MDAs have such staff in abundance.
