As President Bola Ahmed Tinubu marked his 74th birthday Saturday, basketball administrator Igoche Mark joined the tributes, singling out the president’s impact on Nigerian sport.

In a statement released hours after Tinubu’s low-key birthday message, Mark a former basketball player and contender in the Nigeria Basketball Federation election said the Renewed Hope agenda has begun to restore athlete confidence eroded by years of unpaid allowances and poor welfare.

“Mr. President’s acknowledgment of sacrifice and reform resonates deeply with us in sport,” Mark said. “For the first time in a long while, athletes see welfare placed on the national conversation, and that has brought back belief.”

Tinubu’s birthday missive thanked Nigerians for solidarity while noting “a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel” from economic reforms. Mark linked that optimism to recent improvements in camp facilities, timely stipends for continental competitions, and dialogue between the National Sports Commission and federations.

“In basketball, we’ve felt the shift,” he added. “Players know allowances will be paid, and that assurance changes performance.”

Tinubu, who marked the day without fanfare, pledged to confront challenges with citizens’ support. Mark said sports leaders would match that resolve by pushing transparency and athlete-first policies.

The birthday Tinubu’s third in office drew goodwill messages nationwide. For Mark and other sports administrator, the hope is that the president’s 74th year consolidates gains that make Nigerian sport “the pride of Africa.”
