Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, on Friday held a private meeting with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate, Rotimi Amaechi, at his residence in Abuja.
The closed-door meeting comes amid ongoing political consultations within the opposition coalition as preparations gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.
As of the time this report was filed, neither Malami nor Amaechi had disclosed the purpose or outcome of the meeting.
The engagement took place less than 24 hours after Amaechi met with former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, also in Abuja, as key stakeholders continue consultations aimed at strengthening the opposition platform.
Following Thursday’s meeting, Tambuwal congratulated Amaechi on his emergence as the ADC’s vice-presidential candidate, describing him as a seasoned public servant with the experience required to contribute significantly to the party’s objectives.
“Our meeting provided another opportunity to reflect on the enormous responsibility before us as we work with other patriotic Nigerians to build a broad, united and credible platform capable of restoring hope, strengthening our democracy and offering our people the purposeful leadership they deserve,” Tambuwal said in a statement.
Tambuwal also welcomed the recent judgment of the Federal High Court, which affirmed the legitimacy of the Senator David Mark-led National Working Committee of the ADC.
He described the ruling as a triumph for constitutional democracy, the rule of law and due process.
According to the former governor, the court’s decision has removed legal uncertainty surrounding the party’s leadership and allows members to concentrate on consolidating the party ahead of the next general election.
He added that the judgment provides the ADC with an opportunity to strengthen its internal unity while presenting Nigerians with what he described as a credible political alternative founded on justice, inclusion, competence and national renewal.
Amaechi was recently unveiled as the running mate to the ADC presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, for the 2027 presidential election.
The party has also completed the submission of the names of Atiku Abubakar and Rotimi Amaechi on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) nomination portal as part of preparations for the 2027 polls.
Although details of Friday’s meeting with Malami remain undisclosed, the engagement is expected to fuel speculation about ongoing consultations within the opposition coalition as it works towards presenting a united front in the next general election.
