Lagos: Lawmakers Vehicles, Generators To Cost  Double Of Flood Control Budget

LAGOS ASSEMBLY

Lagos State’s 2025 budget shows that more funds will be spent on vehicles, renovations and generators for the House of Assembly than on combating flooding, despite the state’s worsening flood crisis.

The Assembly has allocated N20.6 billion for 40 backup vehicles, 40 utility buses and 40 official cars; N4.5 billion for 50 generators and N11 billion for renovations to the complex, including gatehouses, car parks and the main building. Additional N30 billion will go towards a new fence, landscaping, beautification and an access road.

In total, these projects will consume N65 billion—nearly twice the N33 billion earmarked for erosion and flood control.

This came as Lagos reels from heavy flooding. On Tuesday, hours of rainfall left Mushin and other areas submerged, paralysing movement and crippling businesses. Vehicles struggled through waterlogged roads, traders counted heavy losses and several parts of the state remained gridlocked on Wednesday.

The state government has since apologised to residents affected by the flood.
