Terrorism

From HASSAN JIRGI Maiduguri

Suspected members of the Islamic  State of West Africa Province, ISWAP,  yesterday attacked a military base in Ngamdu town in Borno State and killed several soldiers.

A community source said the terrorists stormed  Ngamdu military camp around 2am and began shooting at soldiers on duty from no direction.

Following the attack, the military reportedly sealed off the Maiduguri–Damaturu highway, leaving many travelers and motorists stranded.

The insurgents reportedly carried out a late-night assault on  Ngamdu military camp, causing casualties among the troops.

Another community said  troops blocked the highway in the early hours yesterday, as part of a security operation involving cordon-and-search tactics to track the attackers and prevent further threats in the area.

Our correspondent gathered that Damaturu-Maiduguri route serves as a critical link between Yobe and Borno States capitals and is widely used for  civilian travel and commercial transportation.

However, the sudden closure  left scores of commuters and goods-laden vehicles stranded.

Some of the travellers urged the military authority and  Borno and Yobe  governments to intervene and open the road.

Military authorities have urged the public to remain patient, noting that the road will remain shut until the area is fully secured.

As at the time of filing this report, there was no official statement from the military and other security agencies.
