Is Gyökeres an Answer to Arsenal’s Five-Year Trophy Drought?

While Arsenal’s five-year wait for silverware can’t be blamed solely on the absence of a prolific striker, it has certainly been a missing piece in Mikel Arteta’s puzzle. That gap may finally be filled with the arrival of Viktor Gyökeres.

The Swedish forward joins the Gunners with a formidable reputation, having netted 97 goals and provided 26 assists in just 102 appearances for Sporting CP. His clinical form made him the most prolific striker across Europe’s top 10 leagues last season, with 39 goals to his name — including 12 penalties — and 27 non-penalty strikes, still more than any other player.

Gyökeres’ shooting stats are particularly striking: 139 shots across the season, averaging one every 20 minutes, with 4.5 shots per 90 minutes. In comparison, Gabriel Jesus managed 3.0 and Kai Havertz just 2.6 per 90 in the Premier League. He also had a staggering 327 touches inside the opposition box, highlighting his constant presence in attacking areas.

His arrival caps off a massive summer spending spree for Arsenal, with Arteta also securing midfielders Martín Zubimendi and Christian Nørgaard, goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, winger Noni Madueke, and Valencia centre-back Cristhian Mosquera. The total outlay stands at £210 million — the club’s biggest under Arteta.

With Gyökeres now leading the line, Arsenal fans will hope he brings not just goals, but the spark needed to end their long-standing trophy drought. If his Sporting form is anything to go by, the Emirates could be in for a thrilling season.
