Delta Democrats Forum has urged the Federal Government to up its security infrastructure to tackle what it described as the worsening security challenges facing Nigeria.
In a press release issued by Convener of the Forum, Comrade Ufuoma Steven Atare, the group called for an urgent and massive funding of security agencies as well as provision of modern equipment, welfare, and logistics to combat the rising cases of banditry and kidnappings.
Atare, in the release tagged “An Open Letter To President Bola Ahmed Tinubu” noted that the nation is bleeding and government needs to match action with its words.
It said the group felt compelled to draw President Tinubu’s attention to the worsening insecurity, hunger, and economic misery ravaging the country under his administration.
The release quoted the convener as saying that “Today, Nigerians live in fear. Criminals are freely terrorising villages, highways, farmlands, and urban centres. The nation has witnessed a horrifying escalation of kidnappings, bandit attacks, and terror incidents.
“The recent killing of a serving Brigadier General by criminal elements is a national shame and a clear signal that Nigeria’s security architecture is collapsing. When a senior military officer is not safe, what is the fate of the ordinary Nigerian?”.
Stressing that the dangerous complacency by the Federal Government is enabling the collapse of the nation, the group tasked the National Assembly to rise up to the occasion by rallying the executive arm of government to deliver on its basic constitutional mandate of welfare and security of the citizens
It insisted that Nigeria requires a national security emergency plan to end killings and restore confidence.
According to Atare what the nation needs is an “Urgent and massive funding of security agencies, including modern equipment, welfare, and logistics.
“Swift economic reforms that put Nigerians first, not political elites.
Concluding, Atare said; “History will be harsh on any leader who remains unmoved as a nation collapses right before him”.
