Gombe State University (GSU) has unveiled a modern Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) surveillance system across its main campus as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen security and ensure the safety of students, staff and visitors.
The university disclosed that the newly installed solar-powered surveillance network offers round-the-clock monitoring of pedestrian, vehicular and bicycle movements throughout the campus.
According to the institution, the surveillance system is integrated with the University’s Central Security Control Room and supported by an upgraded walkie-talkie communication network designed to facilitate rapid response to security situations.
The development was announced in a statement released on Friday by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Hadu Naphtali Ligari.
The Chief Security Officer of the institution, retired Lieutenant Commander Jafaru Kamara, described the project as a major boost to the university’s security framework.
Kamara commended the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Sani Ahmed Yauta, and the management of the university for investing in advanced security infrastructure, noting that the system would significantly improve surveillance, coordination among security personnel, emergency response and investigations into security-related incidents.
He explained that the introduction of the CCTV network would strengthen the institution’s capacity to monitor activities across the campus and respond promptly to potential threats.
Speaking on the initiative, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Sani Ahmed Yauta, said the installation of the surveillance system marks another important milestone in the university’s determination to provide a secure and conducive atmosphere for teaching, learning and research.
According to him, the CCTV network has already demonstrated its value by assisting security personnel in reviewing incidents and supporting investigations whenever the need arises.
Prof. Yauta urged members of the university’s Security Unit to utilise the facility professionally and responsibly in the discharge of their duties.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the university management to protecting lives and property while ensuring that the institution remains a peaceful environment for academic activities.
The Vice-Chancellor also informed staff, students, visitors and members of the public that all activities within the university’s main campus are now being monitored continuously through the newly installed surveillance network.
He explained that the 24-hour CCTV coverage is intended to improve campus security, discourage criminal activities and promote greater accountability among members of the university community.
According to him, the initiative forms part of the institution’s broader strategy of investing in modern security technology to safeguard the university community and strengthen confidence in its security system.
The university noted that the deployment of the surveillance infrastructure underscores its commitment to creating a peaceful, secure and enabling environment that supports academic excellence, quality research and effective community service.
Management expressed confidence that the project would contribute significantly to maintaining law and order within the campus while enhancing the overall welfare of staff, students and visitors.
