Residents of Chatta village in Hawul Local Government Area of Borno State have been thrown into mourning ,following the death of four family members.
The victims, Yakubu Samanja, his wife, Esther, and their two children, Amos and Maryamu Yakubu, died under circumstances suspected by residents to be as a result of toxic fumes from a generator.
A relative of the victims, Ibrahim Samanja said he discovered the bodies on Tuesday morning after repeated knocking on their door went unanswered.
“I arrived there around 7am, I kept knocking and there was no response which made me suspicious, so I forced the door open and I found them dead,” he said.
Local officials and health personnel were contacted immediately, but later confirmed their death.
The corpses were sent to Marama General Hospital for further investigations.
Community members described the tragedy as a great loss, especially as the family had shown no signs of illness or distress before the incident.
Preliminary investigations showed no signs of violence or struggle, which further supports the suspicion that generator fumes may have been the cause.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Daso said investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of death.
