FRSC Books 1,890 For  Attempts To Bribe Officers In Lagos

Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Lagos State Sector Command has booked 1,890 persons for attempting to bribe marshals  from January till September.

The Sector Commander, Kehinde Hamzat disclosed this at the command’s Ember Months Campaign 2025 media conference yesterday.

Speaking at the campaign with the theme: ‘Take Responsibility for Your Safety: Stop Distracted Driving,’ Hamzat said the command booked 803, 531 and 556 persons in the first, second and third quarters of 2025, respectively.

“Over the years, there have been complaints that road safety corps is a corrupt organisation.

“We have bad eggs among us, but we should also understand that officers are recruited from the public,” he said.

He disclosed that FRSC officers rejected a total of N849,000 as bribe from the first to the third quarters of the year.

“January recorded N88,600, February, N102,400; March, N104,300; April, N32,500; May, N167,500;  June,  N47,000; July, N26,500; August, N148,000, and September – N132,200, all totalling N849, 000,” he said.

The FRSC boss said the command recorded 270 cases of  overloading in the first quarter of 2025, 442 in the second quarter and 676 in the  third quarter.

He said the command recorded 114 accidents in the first quarter, 95 in the second quarter and  89 in  third quarter.

“We have a target of having 10 percent reduction on  Road Traffic Crashes, RTC, but so far, we have achieved 15.17 per cent, and this is a reduction compared with what we had last year,” he said.

On Drivers License Violation, DLV, he said the command recorded 888, 1,269 and 1,291 violations  in the first, second and third quarters, all totalling 3,448.

Hamzat noted that a total of 121,897 licences was produced in Lagos in the last nine months, adding that 51,267 were unclaimed.

“The number of licences produced in January was 16,293, February – 12,172; March – 7,139; April – 9,797; May – 13,915; June – 15,869; July – 17,751;  August – 17,902; and September – 11,059,” he said.

Hamzat read Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed’s speech at the occasion,  saying  the theme reinforces the belief that human factor is a major cause of road accident.

“ It also draws attention to the fact that drivers are largely responsible for crashes on our highways.

“The 2024 Operation Zero ( December 15, 2024 – January15, 2025) crash statistics revealed that 432 persons were killed and  2,070 persons  injured out of 533 reported cases of road crashes.

“The records also show that the major causes of those crashes were driver fatigue, overloading of persons, conveyance of persons in haulage vehicles and travelling with fuel in plastic containers.”

He added that the theme was carefully chosen to address road traffic infringements by drivers. (NAN)
