Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Abuja, has clarified the circumstances surrounding the death of Ms Ifunanya Nwagene, who died from neurotoxic complications, following a snake bite on January 31.
It dismissed claims on social media that the hospital failed to provide adequate care.
In a press statement issued on Sunday and signed by the Head of Clinical Services, Dr Bioku Muftau, the hospital said Ms Nwagene received prompt and appropriate medical attention upon arrival.
According to the statement, treatment include resuscitation efforts, intravenous fluids, intranasal oxygen and the administration of polyvalent anti-snake venom.
The management explained that after a rapid assessment, it was established that the patient had suffered severe neurotoxic complications.
According to the statement, while arrangements were being made to transfer her to the Intensive Care Unit, her condition deteriorated suddenly, prompting immediate cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other life-saving measures, which proved unsuccessful.
The hospital expressed condolences to the Nwagene family and stressed that allegations of non-availability of anti-snake venom and delayed response were “unfounded.”
The hospital reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and quality patient care, urging the public to rely on credible sources for information rather than social media speculation.
