Ahead of the Area Council election in the Federal Capital Territory on the February 21, the candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), for the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Dr Obinna Simon, has boasted that he would defeat the incumbent, Christopher Zaka Maikalangu.
Simon stated that the 137-member Campaign Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the African Democratic Congress, ADC are no threat to his electoral victory.
He stated this in a media chat on Sunday, and called on the security agencies to hold the incumbent AMAC leadership responsible for whatever happens to him, his family or supporters before, during and and after elections.
According to him, the supporters of the present AMAC leadership, in a video on social media, allegedly threatened to run the non-natives out of Abuja should Maikalangu fail to win the AMAC contest.
“So I see no reason why someone should come and start threatening people. Is this contest constitutionally approved or not? It is. I am a citizen of this country.
“I have the right to vote and be voted for. So I see no reason why someone should come and start threatening people. Is this contest constitutionally approved or not? It is. I am a citizen of this country.
“I have the right to vote and be voted for, so I’m doing nothing wrong. If the incumbent chairman was doing very well? Do you have to threaten people?
“Why do you have to threaten people? And we understand this tactics. You threaten people so that there will be voter apathy. It will not happen. The people will come out.
“This card of indigeneship and non indigene will not work this time around, because we love the indigenes as our own. We love the indigenes as our family. We have been with them.
“We do businesses with them. So you cannot come because of your political selfish interests, you now try to bring one kind of division to start what is not there.
“So I’m going to address this on my page, specifically to address this individual and call the security agencies to make sure that they address this issue, because it is very, very important. Threats like this should not be taken lightly.
“Apart from not taking these threats lightly, only God knows what kind of meeting happened behind closed doors, not to talk of voicing it out. I am sure that is not all that he voiced out,” he said.
The SDP candidate promised to work with traditional rulers, run a transparent government, empower teachers and the youth, and manage security of AMAC if elected.
