Edo State governor, Monday Okpebholo yesterday absorbed about 5,000 contract teachers into the Ministry of Education as permanent staff.
The teachers, who for years were on contract with a monthly stipend of N65,000 during the administration of former Governor Godwin Obaseki, were formally handed appointment letters at a ceremony at the in Government House, Benin.
AljazirahNigeria recalls that the state government had earlier announced the absorption of 4,000 volunteer teachers under the EdoStar Teaching Programme who were employed during the last days of Obaseki’s administration and the recruitment of 500 new teachers to strengthen the education system.
A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Fred Itua, stated that
Okpebholo, who personally supervised the distribution of the letters, emphasised government’s commitment to their welfare.
“I decided to supervise the process myself. As you collect your appointment letters today, you will also receive transport fare because I know many of you have traveled long distances,” the governor stated.
He acknowledged the vital role that teachers play in shaping the future of Edo State, underscoring the administration’s dedication to improve their welfare.
“You are very important to us. Your reward is no longer in heaven; it is here, under our watch,” he added.
Addressing the teachers earlier, the Commissioner for Education, Dr Paddy Iyamu expressed appreciation for their perseverance in the last three years despite the challenges of being on contract.
“You have been suffering for years, yet you stayed committed to educating our children, waking up at night to prepare lesson notes. Beautiful schools without teachers are useless. Today, an angel has come, a leader who thinks about your welfare day and night,” Iyamu said.
Highlighting the achievements of Okpebholo’s administration within the education sector, the commissioner noted the construction of over 68 schools within one year, aimed at benefiting children from all walks of life.
Iyamu added that the EDU-Rescue Programme was launched to give children from poor backgrounds access to quality education.
