The stage is set for a week-long celebration of top-class volleyball as the 2026 Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF) Super Cup tips off today, Monday, February 2, at the Indoor Sports Hall of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
Twelve clubs—six men’s and six women’s teams will battle for supremacy in what promises to be an electrifying showcase of skill, passion and competitive pride.
The championship will run until February 8, 2026, offering fans a thrilling volleyball fiesta in the heart of Nigeria’s capital.
Speaking at a press conference on Sunday in Abuja, the Chairman of the League Management Committee (LMC) and Second Vice President of the Nigeria Volleyball Federation, Architect Adamu Tenimu, said the Super Cup represents a major step in the Federation’s drive to elevate the sport.
According to him, the tournament follows a technical meeting that set the tone for the competition, with officials confirming that the championship will be staged using an internationally accepted format. The Super Cup also marks the return of SUFAKO to the Federation’s annual calendar after several years of absence.
“Six clubs—three each from the men’s and women’s leagues—qualified for the Super Cup, drawn from teams that finished first, second and third in their respective leagues.
“The teams will compete in pool stages, with the top two sides from each group advancing to the semifinals and final, while other teams play classification matches to determine final rankings.
“Designed to crown a true “champion of champions,” the Super Cup will reward excellence with cash prizes for the top three teams, a championship shield for the winner, and financial subsidies to support participating clubs.”
The Federation reaffirmed its commitment to innovation and continuous improvement, disclosing that broader reforms—particularly within the league structure—are already underway, with visible changes expected ahead of the new season.
According to NVBF maintaining high standards across all levels of the game remains a priority, encompassing administrators, coaches, referees and players. The goal, they noted, is to create a professional, well-structured environment where volleyball can thrive nationwide.
Architect Tenimu also highlighted improved competition planning, pointing to a smooth technical meeting and the availability of a suitable playing venue—an issue that posed challenges during the last Premier League season. This progress, they said, reflects the Federation’s determination to avoid past setbacks.
Matches will begin daily at 10:00am, with club departures scheduled for February 8, as the Federation continues its push to strengthen competition standards and drive the growth of volleyball in Nigeria.
