CAN Condemns Plateau Killings, Seeks Justice For Victims 

Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Plateau State Chapter, has condemned the killing of residents at Angwan Rukuba Community in Jos North Local Government Area. 

State Chairman of CAN, Reverend Dunka Gomwalk,  condemned the killing in a statement yesterday in Jos.

Yet-to-be identified gunmen on Sunday night attacked the community, killed some persons and injured others.

Gomwalk, while calling for justice for the victims, urged security agencies to carry out a thorough investigation into the matter.

“CAN strongly condemns the barbaric, heinous and terrorist attack on innocent citizens in Angwan Rukuba community that left 27 persons dead including a pregnant woman.

“CAN demands justice for the victims and their families and calls on government and spirited individuals to come to the aid of those hospitalised, as well as the families of the bereaved.

“We are also calling for a thorough investigation into this painful, needless and unfortunate incident to identify and apprehend the perpetrators of this crime, and make them face the full wrath of the law,” Gomwalk said.

The chairman appealed for calm and restraint in the community, and urged citizens to be law abiding and support security agencies to restore normalcy to the area. NAN

Niger Senator, Jiya Dumps PDP For APC

Senator representing Niger South Senatorial District, Peter Jiya, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Jiya’s letter of defection was read by the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, at the resumption of plenary yesterday.

The letter reads: “I was formerly a member of the PDP, which was my sponsoring party.

“However today, I have resigned my membership of the PDP. This decision is due to the ongoing quarrels and significant divisions within the party.

“Furthermore, kindly take notice that effective today, I have decided to join and associate with the APC, in order to continue my political career.”

The senator expressed profound gratitude to his former party for giving him the opportunity to serve the nation and humanity.

“I remain grateful and wish the party well in the future, especially if it is able to resolve its internal challenges,” he said.

Following Jiya’s defection, the latest configuration of senators across party line is: APC, 90; ADC, nine; PDP, four; APGA, one and NDC, one.

While New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP, has one senator and Accord one, Social Democratic Party, SDP, and Labour Party have none, making it 106 senators, with three seats vacant due to the demise of their former occupants. NAN
