From Segun Ayinde, Abeokuta
Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona yesterday died at the age of 91.
Adetona, died a few hours after his long time friend, ex-president Muhammadu Buhari died at a hospital in London, the United Kingdom.
He was the longest reigning traditional ruler who ascended the throne on April 2, 1960 and ruled Ijebu land for 64 years.
Both Buhari and Adetona were close friends since 1980s.
Recalled that in 1983 before Buhari’s military coup, the then Ogun State Governor Olabisi Onabanjo, had signed an order removing Awujale Adetona, set to take effect on January 2, 1984.
However, the coup on December 31, 1983, interrupted the plan, and Buhari’s intervention inadvertently saved Adetona’s throne.
