Benue: Community Pleads For Protection Amid Herdsmen Attacks

From Henry Ibya, Makurdi

People of Kundav community in Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State have pleaded for government’s intervention over the incessant attacks and killings by armed Fulani herdsmen.

A fleeing resident who simply gave his name as Joseph told journalists Sunday in Makurdi that the kidnap of two ladies who were returning from the farm in Ugbaam had sparked outrage and fear among residents of Tse Bagudu, Ugbaam and Uyam wards.

He informed that the community is under severe threat from Fulani herdsmen who had been destroying farmlands and livelihoods.

“Just yesterday, herders grazed their cattle across Sebastian Ibian’s farmland in Tse Bagudu, destroying three to five hectares of yams, cassava and beans,” he said.

He said this incident was not isolated, but part of a series of attacks aimed at destroying the peace and livelihood of the people.

The fleeing victim blamed the killings on  lack of community coordination and leadership, which he noted had led to residents feeling vulnerable, abandoned and enslaved in their own land. He called on the state government, security agencies and relevant stakeholders to act immediately to protect them.

According to the victim, the situation is not just a security issue, but a humanitarian crisis, adding that residents are tired, hurting and not safe.

He said the people deserve protection, peace and the right to live in their ancestral land, appealing for help as the community is under siege.

Reacting, the Police Public Relations Officer, Udeme Edet said the police is working tirelessly to safeguard lives.

According to her, tactical teams have been deployed to the area and other vulnerable communities with patrols being carried out daily, advising residents to always report suspicious movements to the police for prompt action.
