Benin Coach Rohr: I Want To Go Again To World Cup

Benin coach Gernot Rohr has declared he wishes tomorrow to qualify his team to the 2026 World Cup after he did same with the Super Eagles in 2018.

Benin are top of Group C of the qualifying tournament for next year’s Mundial with 17 points from nine matches.

They face a most daunting task tomorrow in Uyo, where they will be up against third-placed Nigeria, who also stand a chance of qualifying for the World Cup.

A draw tomorrow in Uyo could well send the Cheetahs of Benin to their first-ever World Cup against most expectations.

Rohr said that is what he hopes to achieve now.

“When I arrived in Benin, they trusted me with a three-year contract. I said we want to go to the World Cup, I did the World Cup with Nigeria in Russia, we had a very young team, the youngest in the World Cup in fact, and I want to do it again,” said the Franco-German coach, who qualified Nigeria to the 2018 World Cup in style.

“We can dream, we must make the players dream, we must make the staff dream, and why not?

“It’s true that there are favorites in our group, with South Africa and Nigeria who, on paper, are much better in the rankings above us, but we have shown that we can compete.”
