The Rivers State chapter of the African Democratic Congress has commenced its governorship primary election across the state ahead of the forthcoming governorship poll.

The exercise, which is being held simultaneously in all 319 wards of Rivers State on Friday, is taking place under the Option A4 voting method, a system that requires voters to openly queue behind the candidate of their choice.

Officials from the party’s National Election Committee have also been deployed across various locations in the state to monitor and supervise the conduct of the primary election.

Before the commencement of voting, governorship aspirants reportedly held a meeting to discuss the exercise and other party arrangements ahead of the contest.

During the meeting, two of the seven aspirants officially withdrew from the governorship race and declared support for Gabriel Pidomson, a former member of the Rivers State House of Assembly and former Secretary to the Rivers State Government.

One of the aspirants who stepped down from the race was Henry Ugboma.

Other aspirants still participating in the governorship primary include Sokonte Davies, Farah Dagogo, Leloonu Nwibubasa, and Allen Hart.

Party officials say the primary election is expected to produce the ADC candidate that will represent the party in the upcoming governorship election in Rivers State.

The exercise has so far witnessed the presence of party members and electoral officials across several wards, with voting and collation processes ongoing under the supervision of the committee members assigned by the party leadership.
