As the maiden Amateur Basketball Academies championship draws nearer, the Association is set to hold Referees clinic in package B, Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja. The clinic, which is scheduled to be held between the 9th and 11th of July, 2026, will target boys and girls of ages 17 to 25 years.
This was agreed after a four hours board meeting held at the multi-purpose Indoor hall of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja. Other decisions taken at the meeting include that those that will partipate at the clinic must be students who are in schools and also have basketball knowledge both in the Federal Capital Territory and environs.
The objectives, among others, are to build young officials who will catch up with the new international standard. Also,
to develop young and effective basketball officials as well as to give opportunities to the participants to pick up a career in basketball officiating.
The 3-day training plan and activities will include practical sessions. This will focus on numbering, basic mechanics, court movement, rotation, use of whistle/ whistle timing, and violation/ fouls while the Class session will focus on rules / Interpretation, type of violations, types of fouls and game management.
The board also agreed to visit Taraba, Gombe, Adamawa, and Benue state as part of its mission to take ABA vision to all states of federation after successfully organised training and trainers clinic in Minna, Niger State last month.
The meeting also decentralized the maiden championship venues to zones in the Federal Capital Territory rather than holding it only in the city center.
While appealing to the members to be focused on the objectives of the Association, the board retriated its early saying that the Amateur Basketball Academies is not for politics but rather to bring all basketball academies under one umbrella
The board members who attended the meeting include ABA President, DC Aliyu Lucky Abubakar, Mazi Valentine Orji, Kayode Adeniyi, Coach Adeka Daudu, Coach Emmanuel Odah, Coach Alex Ujoh, Coach Oyekan Oyedeji and Genevieve Ogechi Ihenewengwa, the board secretary.
