AAU: Edo Govt Approves Construction Of Lecture Halls, Student Hostels

Edo State government has approved a series of  projects including the construction of lecture theatres, hostels and markets, as well as the renovation of schools, in a bold move to strengthen education and boost economic activities.

The approvals were given during the State Executive Council, EXCO, meeting held at the Government House, Benin City, yesterday.

Briefing journalists after the meeting, the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Paul Ohonbamu disclosed that Council approved three major building projects for Ambrose Alli University, AAU, Ekpoma. 

These include the construction of 1,500-seater lecture theatre, twin 300-capacity lecture theatre and a 600-bed hostel to address the accommodation needs of students.

According to Ohonbamu, “It is  in fulfillment of the governor’s promise to provide critical infrastructure for Ambrose Alli University. The facilities will not only ease the challenges of overcrowding in lecture halls, but also improve the overall learning environment for students.”

He revealed that EXCO approved the remodeling and reconstruction of eight secondary schools in addition to the commencement of phase three of the Basic Schools Renovation Programme. The benefiting local government areas include Ovia North-East, Ikpoba-Okha, Etsako West, Esan West and Uhunmwonde, while contracts were also awarded for select dilapidated schools in Etsako East and Esan Central.

According to him, the Executive Council also endorsed several projects under the Edo State Oil and Gas Producing Areas Development Commission, EDSOPADEC. These include the construction of four modern markets in Orhionmwon, Ikpoba-Okha and Ovia North-East Local Government Areas, as well as the supply of 25 transformers to boost electrification in oil-producing communities.

Also EXCO approved the construction of a modern market at the popular Jatu Market in Edo North. This project is aimed at strengthening commerce, expanding economic opportunities and improving the livelihoods of the people.

On his part, the Commissioner for Education, Dr Paddy Iyamu emphasised the administration’s commitment to make quality education accessible to every Edo child.

According to the commissioner, government is  determined to equip Edo children with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in today’s society. This explains the administration’s focus on renovating and upgrading schools across the three senatorial districts.
