President Bola Tinubu has mourned the 30 victims killed as flood wreak havock in Jigawa State and assured the state government of Federal Government’s support.
Tinubu, in a statement issued yesterday by Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, condoled with the state government over the flood disaster.
He commiserates with the bereaved families and victims of the flooding, which has impacted about 14 local government areas and many households, according to the statement.
It quoted the President as saying that “…recurring environmental disasters underscore the urgency of sustaining measures to address climate change and its perils, as well as remove man-made elements to the challenge.
“The President prays for the repose of the souls of the deceased and assures the people of Jigawa of his administration’s support at this difficult time”.
AljazirahNigeria reported that heavy rain on Tuesday displaced more than 9,366 also ravaged 7,379 hectares of land and affected 4,699 houses.
Heavy rainfall severely impacted 90 communities across the state.
It would be recalled that the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NIMET, had earlier forecasted severe flooding in 18 local government areas of Jigawa state.
Meanwhile, Executive Secretary of the Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency, JSEMA, Dr Haruna Mairiga, said the state government is providing aid to those affected. The aid includes thousands of bags of rice, maize, millet, gari, and medical supplies for the Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs.
Mairiga, said two children have died and several others are suffering from diarrhoea at IDP camps in Yanduna Primary School, Miga LGA, and Ayo LGA.
He confirmed that local government emergency committees were working tirelessly to assist the victims.
Similarly, Bauchi State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA has confirmed the death of 11 more people following last week’s flood disaster in Bauchi North Senatorial District, bringing the number of deaths recorded so far to 18.
The flood also destroyed over 200 houses and washed away over 300 farmlands, leaving villagers stranded and homeless.
The flood occurred in Gadiya village in Gamawa Local Government Area of the state where affected communities left in serious need of supplies in the wake of the disaster.
