The Organising Secretary of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Lagos State Council, Toba Ajiboye, popularly known as Ijaya, has died after sustaining gunshot wounds during an attack by suspected gunmen in Lagos.

Ajiboye was reportedly attacked on Sunday night while returning home from his childhood neighbourhood in Fadeyi.

According to reports, the gunmen intercepted his vehicle along the Ikorodu Road corridor and opened fire, leaving the vehicle riddled with bullets.

Images and videos shared on social media after the incident showed the white vehicle riddled with multiple bullet holes across the windscreen and body.

Initial reports suggested that Ajiboye and other occupants of the vehicle survived the attack after suffering gunshot injuries. However, later reports confirmed that the union official eventually died from injuries sustained during the shooting.

Reacting to the development, the Chairman of the Lagos State NURTW, Alhaji Mustapha Adekunle, popularly known as Sego, expressed deep sorrow over Ajiboye’s death, describing him as a loyal associate and dependable friend.

In a tribute shared on his Facebook page on Tuesday, Sego said he was devastated by the tragic loss, noting that Ajiboye’s dedication to the union and their political structure would be difficult to replace.

“The news of the sudden passing of Comrade Toba Ajiboye has left me deeply saddened and heartbroken. It is difficult to come to terms with the loss of such a loyal, dependable, and committed ally,” he wrote.

His friendship, unwavering support, and selfless dedication to the union over the years will forever remain etched in my heart,” Sego added.

He extended condolences to Ajiboye’s family, friends and members of the NURTW, praying for God to grant the deceased eternal rest and give his loved ones the strength to bear the loss.
