Ex-Okada Rider Arrested At Lagos Airport After Excreting 100 Wraps Of Methamphetamine

NDLEA arrests ex-okada rider after excreting 100 wraps of meth in Lagos

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested a former commercial motorcyclist at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, after he allegedly excreted 100 wraps of methamphetamine he swallowed in Uganda in an attempt to smuggle the illicit drug into Nigeria.

The agency disclosed the development in a statement issued on Sunday by its Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, and shared on the agency’s official X account.

According to the NDLEA, the suspect was intercepted immediately after arriving in Lagos from Uganda following actionable intelligence received by the agency.

The statement explained that officers had placed the suspect under close surveillance before his arrival and monitored him after his arrest, suspecting he had concealed narcotics internally.

Subsequent investigations confirmed that the suspect had ingested 100 wraps of methamphetamine before boarding the flight to Nigeria.

He was thereafter kept under observation by NDLEA officers until he expelled the consignments, which were recovered as evidence.

The anti-narcotics agency said preliminary findings indicated that the suspect had worked as an okada rider in Lagos for approximately 15 years before allegedly becoming involved in an international drug trafficking network.

According to investigators, he joined the syndicate in an attempt to improve his financial condition through illegal means.

Commenting on the arrest, the NDLEA described the incident as another example of the dangers associated with transnational drug trafficking and the false promise of quick wealth.

“After 15 years of working as an okada rider in Lagos, this individual decides he needed to forcefully upgrade and change his social status by joining a transnational drug trafficking organisation,” the agency stated.

The NDLEA noted that rather than achieving the financial breakthrough he sought, the suspect’s alleged involvement in drug trafficking had instead resulted in his arrest and possible prosecution.

“That dream has not only crumbled now but is ending in premium tears following his arrest at the Lagos airport by #ndlea_nigeria officers after excreting a whopping 100 wraps of methamphetamine he ingested in far away Uganda,” the statement added.

The agency did not immediately disclose the suspect’s identity or the estimated street value of the recovered narcotics.

It also did not indicate whether further arrests had been made in connection with the suspected trafficking syndicate operating between Uganda and Nigeria.

The arrest forms part of the NDLEA’s ongoing crackdown on international drug trafficking networks using Nigerian airports and other entry points to move illicit substances into the country.

In recent years, the agency has intensified surveillance at airports through intelligence-driven operations, leading to several arrests involving suspects who concealed narcotics in luggage, body compartments and through ingestion.

The NDLEA has repeatedly warned Nigerians against participating in drug trafficking, stressing that many traffickers are recruited with promises of substantial financial rewards but often end up facing lengthy prison sentences and the destruction of their lives.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening border surveillance, dismantling drug trafficking syndicates and ensuring that those involved in the illegal narcotics trade are brought to justice.
