Tinubu Approves National Health Technology Office, Appoints Dr Obi Adigwe as Pioneer Coordinator

Dr Obi Adigwe

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of the National Health Technology and Data Analytics Office (NHTDAO) to coordinate Nigeria’s digital health agenda and strengthen the country’s health technology ecosystem.

The approval was announced in a statement issued on Friday by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga.

According to the statement, the President also appointed Obi Adigwe as the pioneer National Coordinator of the newly established office.

The Presidency explained that the NHTDAO will operate under the Office of the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare and will serve as the central platform for coordinating Nigeria’s digital health initiatives.

Rather than taking over the responsibilities of existing health institutions, the office will strengthen collaboration among government agencies, private sector stakeholders, and other healthcare organisations.

The statement said, “It will reinforce, not replace, the existing statutory functions of relevant departments and agencies.”

It added that the office would harmonise public and private institutions across Nigeria’s healthcare system, establish common standards for interoperability, and implement the National Digital Health Architecture approved by the National Council on Health in November 2025.

To provide strategic oversight, the office will be supervised by a steering committee jointly chaired by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Ali Pate, and Olaniyi Yusuf, Chairman of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group.

The Presidency said the new office is expected to accelerate Nigeria’s transition to a secure, interoperable, and data-driven healthcare system capable of improving service delivery and health outcomes nationwide.

According to the statement, “The President expects NHTDAO to accelerate Nigeria’s transition to a secure, interoperable and data-driven health system that improves outcomes for all citizens, in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of his administration.”
