Man Remanded In Kirikiri Over Alleged Assault Of Cohabiting Partner In Lagos

A suspected domestic violence offender, Emeka Joseph, has been arrested, arraigned before a court and remanded at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre over the alleged assault of a woman identified as Ezeka Chisom.

The Lagos State Police Command confirmed the development on Wednesday following the circulation of a viral video alleging that Joseph physically assaulted the victim.

According to the command, preliminary investigations revealed that Chisom sustained injuries to her face during the incident, which was allegedly carried out by the suspect with whom she had been living.

In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Lagos State Command, SP Abimbola Adebisi, the police said the matter was promptly investigated after it came to public attention.

“The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a suspect in connection with a case of assault occasioning harm and domestic violence following a viral video in which there was a report that Emeka Joseph assaulted Ezeka Chisom,” the statement said.

The police explained that findings from the initial investigation established that the victim suffered physical injuries during the alleged assault.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the victim was assaulted by the suspect, with whom she had been cohabiting. The victim sustained injuries to her face,” the statement added.

Following his arrest, Joseph was charged before a court of competent jurisdiction where proceedings commenced.

The court subsequently ordered that he be remanded at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre pending further hearing in the matter.

“The suspect has since been charged in court and remanded in Kirikiri Correctional Centre, while the case has been adjourned till 3rd August, 2026,” the police stated.

Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, CP Tijani Fatai, reiterated the command’s commitment to tackling domestic violence and ensuring that offenders are brought to justice.

He emphasised that the command maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy toward all forms of domestic abuse and violence.

According to him, reports involving domestic violence will continue to receive swift attention and thorough investigation.

“The Lagos State Police Command has zero tolerance for all forms of domestic violence. Cases involving violence and abuse will continue to receive prompt attention,” the commissioner said.

Fatai also encouraged members of the public to promptly report cases of domestic violence and other criminal activities to the nearest police station or security formation for immediate intervention.

The police assured residents that efforts would continue to protect vulnerable persons and ensure that offenders are held accountable under the law.

The matter has been adjourned until August 3, 2026, for further hearing.
