Troops of Operation Fansan Yamma have rescued 17 kidnapped victims following a gun battle with suspected bandits in Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

A security source familiar with the operation disclosed the development on Friday, stating that the rescue mission took place on Thursday along a route near Kura Mota village.

According to the source, the victims were abducted after armed bandits intercepted two vehicles travelling through the area.

The attackers reportedly blocked the road and forcefully took the passengers into captivity before security forces were alerted to the incident.

In response, troops of Operation Fansan Yamma swiftly mobilised to the scene and engaged the bandits in a fierce exchange of gunfire.

The source explained that the military’s rapid intervention disrupted the kidnapping operation and forced the criminals to retreat.

“The gallant troops of Operation Fansan Yamma engaged the bandits in a fierce exchange of fire, with several bandits escaping with gunshot wounds,” the source said.

The confrontation resulted in the successful rescue of all 17 abducted victims, who regained their freedom without further harm.

Although the exact identities of the rescued individuals were not disclosed, the source confirmed that the operation prevented what could have become a prolonged hostage situation.

The source, who requested anonymity because he was not authorised to speak publicly on security matters, praised the troops for their courage and professionalism.

According to him, the timely response of the security personnel played a critical role in safeguarding both lives and property.

“The quick response of the troops and continued vigilance saved the lives and property of the occupants of the vehicles,” he stated.

He further noted that security agencies operating in the region have continued to implement proactive measures aimed at curbing criminal activities and protecting vulnerable communities.

The source said the operation demonstrated the effectiveness of ongoing efforts to strengthen security across areas affected by banditry and kidnapping.

He added that the determination and bravery shown by the military personnel helped avert what could have ended in tragedy for the victims and their families.

“The swift response, professionalism, and courage displayed by military personnel averted what could have been a tragic incident,” he said.

While commending the troops, the source also called on residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information that could assist ongoing operations.

He stressed that community support remains essential in the fight against banditry and other criminal activities.

The source particularly urged travellers and farming communities to remain alert and report suspicious movements promptly to security authorities.

Operation Fansan Yamma has been conducting intensified operations across parts of northwestern Nigeria in a bid to tackle insecurity, dismantle criminal networks, and restore peace in affected communities.

The successful rescue of the 17 victims is expected to boost confidence in ongoing security efforts and reinforce the commitment of the military to protecting lives and property in the region.
