DHQ Mourns Late Major General Rabe Abubakar, Vows Intensified Offensive Against Terrorists

Ex-Director of Defence Information, Brigadier-General Rabe Abubakar

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, who died while being held captive by bandits, while reaffirming the Armed Forces of Nigeria’s determination to intensify operations against terrorism and criminal networks across the country.

In a statement issued by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the military described the late officer’s passing as a painful loss to both the armed forces and the nation.

“The Defence Headquarters regrets to announce the passing of Major General Rabe Abubakar (Retired), who tragically lost his life in captivity following his abduction,” the statement said.

The military extended its condolences to the family of the deceased, his colleagues, and Nigerians at large, noting that Abubakar dedicated many years of distinguished service to the country.

According to the statement, the retired general held several strategic appointments during his military career, including serving as Director of Defence Information and spokesperson for various military formations.

“Maj Gen Abubakar served the nation with distinction and held many appointments including spokesperson of various military formations as well as spokesman for the AFN as Director Defence Information.

“He made immense contributions to counter-insurgency operations, professional development of the AFN and numerous other commendable and outstanding impacts,” the statement added.

The Defence Headquarters explained that it deliberately refrained from making public comments regarding his abduction while rescue efforts were ongoing, out of respect for operational considerations and the possibility of securing his freedom.

“The Defence Headquarters withheld public comment on his abduction in deference to ongoing rescue efforts by the AFN and sister security agencies. Every operational resource was deployed in the hope of securing his safe return,” it stated.

Despite the unsuccessful outcome, the military emphasized that the incident would not weaken its resolve in confronting insecurity.

“This sad loss further strengthens the resolve of the AFN. We will remain resolute in the discharge of our constitutional mandate to defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Nigeria and to protect all citizens,” the statement read.

The Defence Headquarters further disclosed that military operations had already been intensified in response to a series of abductions and terrorist activities recorded in different parts of the country, including the kidnapping of the retired general.

“In response to series of unfortunate abductions across Nigeria including that of Maj Gen Abubakar, ongoing operations have since been further intensified to bring perpetrators to justice and to dismantle all terrorist networks threatening our nation,” the military said.

The statement assured Nigerians that the armed forces remain committed to restoring peace and security nationwide and ensuring those responsible for acts of terrorism and banditry face justice.

“We assure Nigerians that the Armed Forces will not relent until peace and security are restored and those responsible for terrorists activities across the nation are held to account,” it added.

Major General Rabe Abubakar, a respected military officer and former Director of Defence Information, was abducted alongside his wife while travelling through Katsina State. His death in captivity has drawn widespread tributes from government officials, security agencies, and members of the military community who have praised his service and dedication to the nation.
