Security operatives in Kebbi State repelled an attack by suspected Lakurawa bandits in Malan Yaro village, Dandi Local Government Area, killing one of the terrorists and recovering two motorcycles.
The incident occurred at about 5:26am on November 25 when the armed gang invaded the community.
Disclosing the incident in a statement yesterday, the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Nafiu Kotarkoshi said the Divisional Police Officer in Kamba led a combined team of police operatives and local vigilantes to confront the attackers.
He said the security team engaged the bandits in a gun duel that lasted several hours, forcing the criminals to flee.
“One of the bandits was neutralised, while others escaped into the forest with suspected gunshot wounds. Two motorcycles abandoned by the fleeing suspects were recovered,” the statement said.
The body of the suspect has been deposited at the General Hospital, Kamba for autopsy.
To prevent reprisals and stabilise the area, additional police operatives, soldiers and vigilante groups have been deployed for sustained clearance operations.
The Commissioner of Police, Bello Sani commended the DPO and all collaborating security units for their “gallant performance and professionalism,” urging them to maintain the momentum in the fight against criminal elements.
The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Birnin Kebbi, for further investigation.
Meanwhile, Kano State Police Command has announced its resolve to strictly enforce the ban on carrying passengers on motorcycles, as well as restrict commercial tricycles from operating between 10pm and 6am in parts of the state.
The command made the announcement in a statement yesterday signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Kiyawa.
According to the statement, the enforcement covers Kano Municipal, Gwale, Dala, Fagge, Nassarawa, Tarauni, Kumbotso, Ungogo (Jido area), and Dawakin Kudu (Tambuwal, Gurjiya, and Jido wards).
“The Kano State Police Command, in collaboration with other security agencies, hereby reiterates the enforcement of the existing ban on the conveyance of passengers on all forms of motorcycles and the restriction of commercial tricycles from operating between 10pm and 6am daily in the state.
“The laws providing for these bans as earlier announced by the Kano State Government, remain in full force across the following affected local government areas: Kano Municipal, Gwale, Dala, Fagge, Nassarawa, Tarauni, Kumbotso, Ungogo (Jido Area), Dawakin Kudu (Tambuwal, Gurjiya and Jido Ward).
“The command wishes to remind the public, particularly operators of motorcycles and commercial tricycles, that these measures are designed to enhance public safety and security.
“Any person found operating motorcycles or tricycles in contravention of the ban or restriction will be promptly arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law,” the statement said.
The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori urged residents to cooperate with security agencies and report any suspicious activities.
“We encourage the public to report violations or any suspicious behaviour to the nearest police station or through our emergency numbers: 08032419754, 08123821575, or 09029292926,” he said.
The statement added that the initiative is being implemented in collaboration with other security agencies, including the Kano Road and Traffic Agency, KAROTA, to ensure full compliance for the safety of all residents.
