A Group known as Initiative Against Human Right Abuse and Torture ( INAHURAT) has writes President Tinubu , Attorney General of the Federation, Senate President, Speaker House of Representative, Minister of Police Affairs and Police Service Commission to commence immediate disciplinary proceedings against Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, Inspector-General of Police, for alledged gross misconduct, abuse of office, and obstruction of justice.

This was made known by the coordinator of INAHURAT, Dr Maxwell Opara during a press briefing in Abuja.

He explained that this is all about the most grievous and shameful abuse of police authority perpetrated by the Inspector-General of Police in the case involving Ms. Malory Henry, a citizen of the United States of America and staff of Olam Agri Nigeria Limited, who was criminally violated by one Mr. Kumar Gaurav, an Indian national and employee of the same company, based in Makurdi, Benue State.

“Ms. Henry, who was on official duty in Makurdi, was invited by Mr. Kumar to his private residence under the guise of a welcome treat. Mr. Kumar, after intoxicating her with alcohol, forcefully had carnal knowledge of her without consent. On return to Abuja, she immediately visited Dr. Hassan’s Hospital, Maitama, where a medical examination confirmed sexual penetration consistent with non-consensual intercourse. We have the Medical Report.

“Her employer, Olam Agri Nigeria, acting responsibly, instructed Kenna Partners, her legal representatives, to petition the office of the Inspector-General of Police. The petition dated 11th April 2023 led to an investigation by the Nigerian Police Force, which culminated in a criminal charge (Charge No. MHC/42C/2023) filed on 11th May 2023 against Mr. Kumar before Hon. Justice T.A. Kume of the Benue State High Court. We have the Charges.

“The Prosecution duly called its witnesses, including the IPO and the victim. The Defendant’s no-case submission was dismissed on 13th May 2024, and the matter was ripe for defence on 26th July 2024.

“Shockingly, the prosecuting counsel, E.O. Ochayi, Esq., on that day informed the court that the Inspector-General of Police had instructed the withdrawal of the charge. This led to the discharge of the Defendant, not on merit, but purely on the administrative fiat of the Inspector-General. (We have the record of proceedings). We have the signal emanating from the Legal FORCID Department of the Police which further confirms that the directive for withdrawal originated from the IGP himself.

“We have written to the President, Attorney General of the Federation, Senate President, Speaker House of Representative, Minister of Police Affairs and Police Service Commission and requested thus: To commence immediate disciplinary proceedings against Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, Inspector-General of Police, for gross misconduct, abuse of office, and obstruction of justice,” he stated.

Dr Opara called for the termination of his appointment as Inspector-General of Police, as his continued leadership of the Force poses a clear and present danger to justice and the rule of law in Nigeria.

He charged the Attorney-General of the Federation to ensure the relisting and reinstatement of Charge No. MHC/42C/2023 before the High Court of Benue State, so that the matter can proceed to its logical conclusion in accordance with the law.

The group implored the President, Attorney General of the Federation, Senate President, Speaker House of Representative, Minister of Police Affairs and Police Service Commission to act swiftly to restore confidence in the justice system, protect the dignity of victims of sexual violence, and reaffirm Nigeria’s commitment to both human rights and the sanctity of judicial independence.
