Rivers Gov Sacks Cabinet Over Supreme Court Ruling

From ONYEKACHUKWU MELUWA, Port Harcourt

Rivers State governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara has dissolved the State Executive Council, SEC, and dismissed all commissioners and public officers in his administration.

The announcement was made on Wednesday during a valedictory session with members of his cabinet at the Government House, Port Harcourt, held as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary.

Governor Fubara explained that the move became necessary, following a recent Supreme Court judgment which invalidated the approval process of several of his appointees.

The apex court had earlier affirmed the Martin Amaewhule-led House of Assembly as the legally recognised legislature, nullifying decisions taken by the rival faction led by Victor Oko-Jumbo, which had screened most of his appointments.

In a statement signed by his spokesman, Nelson Chukwudi, the governor expressed gratitude to the outgoing cabinet members for their service and contributions to the growth of the state over the past two years.

Fubara also urged Nigerians to use the independence anniversary as an opportunity to promote unity, peace and cooperation with President Bola Tinubu’s administration in order to build a secure and prosperous nation.

He noted that the dissolution of the cabinet and termination of the appointments take immediate effect.
