A Youth Leadership Clinic for secondary school prefects and student leaders organized recently by the Abuja Leadership Centre (ALC), Yakubu Gowon University, formerly the University of Abuja, has continued to attract commendations.
The event, which took place in Awka, the capital of Anambra State, on September 18, 2025, also brought together young people who are in tertiary institutions, renowned academicians, government officials and illustrious citizens of the state.
The event was jointly organised by the Abuja Leadership Centre and postgraduate students, including Master’s and Doctoral Degree candidates, as part of their academic requirements.
Reflecting on the event, one of the doctoral students, Christy Chinyere Fredrick, revealed that the programme achieved its aim, which was to provide a platform for young leaders in schools to express themselves while receiving training on leadership ethics and culture.
Fredrick noted that the issues raised particularly dwelt on youth leadership, civic engagement, and were well-received by participants, with the event providing an excellent platform for networking with youth leaders, policymakers, and development partners.
She lauded the university and the Centre for the initiative of exposing young people early on the requirements and dynamics of leadership, while urging other tertiary institutions to emulate what the Abuja Leadership Centre has been doing.
Doctoral degree students in Public Governance and Leadership, Policy and Strategic Studies that participated in the youth Clinic include: Christy Chinyere Fredrick, Stanley Chike Okoye, Charles Ogamanya, Otteh Ogochukwu Francesca, Lawrence T. Adigwe, Ijeoma Chika, Pamela Nkem Umeh, Lynda Walter Ngegwe, Chigebi Ada and Anyaora Ukamaka.
While Master’s degree students present at the event were Tochukwu Nwachukwu, Anurika Oraegbunom, Gwacham Maureen, Gwacham Chizoba and Arinze Igboeli.
The Abuja Leadership Centre at Yakubu Gowon University is a TETFUND Centre of Excellence for Public Governance and Leadership, dedicated to enhancing public governance and leadership both in Nigeria and beyond.
