Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Warri Correspondents Chapel, has warned against actions capable of reigniting ethnic crisis in Warri, calling on residents to embrace peace and dialogue.
A communiqué issued at the end of its congress held yesterday at Chief Government Ekpemupolo Press Centre, Warri, appealed to the Ijaw, Itsekiri, Urhobo and other groups in the city to put aside differences and work for peaceful coexistence.
The communiqué was signed by Comrade Sir Jimitota Onoyeme (chairman), Comrade Elo Edremoda (secretary), Comrade Onyekachukwu Meluwa (member) and Elder Dele Oguyemi (member).
The congress emphasized that peace in Warri is fundamental to economic growth and stability in Delta State. It noted that any resurgence of hostility would undermine security and derail ongoing developmental projects.
The NUJ cautioned journalists covering recent agitations in the city to maintain professionalism and objectivity in their reports. It stressed that sensational headlines or biased reportage could worsen tensions and destabilise the fragile peace.
Similarly, the chapel urged social media users to avoid publishing inciting posts. It warned that reckless content online has the potential to fuel ethnic mistrust and provoke violence among communities.
While stressing the need for calm, the congress commended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for the ongoing legacy projects in Warri, Uvwie and surrounding areas. It urged him to expedite critical infrastructural works, particularly road and drainage construction, as the dry season approaches.
The journalists also called on the state government to urgently reconstruct Udu Express Junction/ECN Road, describing it as a lifeline for several local government areas. They demanded immediate attention on the dilapidated FUPRE Junction section of the East-West Road.
Beyond Warri, the NUJ raised alarm over rising security concerns in Agbarho Kingdom, Ughelli North Local Government Area. It condemned the spate of child kidnapping in the area and urged security agencies to act decisively to protect lives.
The congress also expressed worry over recurring cult clashes in Agbarho and surrounding communities, and appealed to law enforcement operatives to step up intelligence-led operations to curb the violence before it escalates.
The communiqué reaffirmed the chapel’s commitment to promote peace, responsible journalism and support for policies that advance development and unity across Delta State.
