A major win yesterday came the way of opposition African Democratic Congress, ADC, as the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, officially recognised the new National Working Committee, NWC, of the  ADC.

In this vein, former President of the Senate, Senator David Mark has been confirmed as National Chairman of the ADC, according to information posted on INEC’s website.

The Commission also  confirmed one time Osun State Governor and immediate past Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola as the National Secretary; Dr. Ibrahim Mani ,National Treasurer; Akibu Dalhatu ,National Financial Secretary, and Prof. Oserheimen Aigberaodion Osunbor, National Legal Adviser of the party.

Meanwhile, amid growing campaign moves ahead of the 2027 general elections, the INEC Chairman,  Professor Mahmood Yakubu, yesterday decried such moves as a violation of electoral laws and a serious threat to democracy in Nigeria.

Yakubu, who made this known at a one-day roundtable on the challenges of early political campaigns, held in Abuja, said the Commission has observed a “disturbing trend” of political activities ahead of official timelines, particularly concerning upcoming off-cycle governorship elections, the FCT Area Council polls, and the 2027 general elections.

Citing Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, he pointed out that campaigns must not commence earlier than 150 days before election day and must end 24 hours before voting begins.

“This constant electioneering undermines the Commission’s ability to monitor campaign finance limits”, he warned, noting that large sums are being spent by politicians and third-party actors outside the regulated campaign period”, he said.

According to him, “This is the real challenge for the Commission in dealing with early campaigns”.

He expressed displeasure that parties, candidates, and supporters continue to engage in rallies, outdoor advertising, and media campaigns well ahead of INEC’s official timetable.

He welcomed the ongoing efforts of the National Assembly to amend the electoral law and expressed confidence that actionable recommendations from experts would be considered.
