The Nigerian Correctional Service, NCoS, has dismissed reports circulating in some sections of the media alleging that a banker serving a jail term in Maiduguri was illegally released and later rearrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
In a statement signed by Umar Abubakar, Deputy Controller of Corrections and Public Relations Officer of the Service, made available to AljazirahNigeria on Thursday, the report was described as “misleading” and having “no iota of truth.”
According to the Service, the said banker was convicted under Section 297 of the Penal Code and sentenced to three years imprisonment without an option of fine. He was admitted into the Medium Custodial Centre, Maiduguri, on June 24, 2025, and is expected to complete his sentence on June 24, 2027.
“The inmate is in the custody of NCoS Maiduguri command and he is going about with his skills acquisition program and other reformatory therapy as enshrined in the Nigerian Correctional Service Act of 2019,” the statement read.
The Service emphasised its commitment to professionalism and human rights, stating it operates “based on best correctional and global practices” in line with the United Nations Minimum Standard Rules for the Treatment of Offenders.
Members of the public were therefore urged to “discountenance the said report as it is not the true position of things.”
The Controller General of Corrections also advised media organisations to always verify their reports before publication.
