The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barr. Nyesom Wike, has pushed back against criticisms accusing him of being “double-faced” in his political dealings, particularly with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Speaking during his monthly media chat in Abuja on Monday, Wike insisted that his decisions have always been guided by principles of equity and justice, stressing that his opposition to the PDP’s 2023 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, was clear and consistent from the start.
Wike maintained that he never pretended to back Atiku, nor did he engage in any deceptive political maneuvering
“I take exception to people saying I’m double faced, we must like people who will tell you what they will do and they will do it.
“I made it clear that I was not going to support Atiku, I did not attend their meeting after which I did a different thing. I stood for equity, fairness, and justice that it’s the South that should produce the presidency in 2023,” he said.
The former Rivers State governor emphasised that his alignment with President Bola Tinubu’s APC-led government was based on a firm conviction rather than opportunism.
“I never hid so the issue of double faced does not arise. If they said they saw me in their campaign and I went to do a different thing that would have been double faced.”
Explaining his rationale further, Wike added, “From day one I said no, I am not going to support them, who am I going to support from the South – in my opinion who stand to win the election, who has the capacity to take away Nigeria from were we where.
“That was my own judgement and I was right, Tinubu won the election because there was the tendency he was going to win.”
