CAF Mulls Use of Foreign Referees for 2025 AFCON

With just four months to go before the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the Confederation of African Football (CAF) is reportedly considering appointing referees from outside the continent to officiate at the tournament.

The move is being discussed in response to growing criticism of African match officials, following several high-profile officiating errors in recent competitions.

Reports within have it that, football governing body indicate that CAF’s Executive Committee has begun internal deliberations, particularly on the possibility of assigning foreign referees to oversee high-stakes matches during the prestigious continental event.

If approved, the decision would represent a major shift in CAF’s approach to tournament officiating and could ignite broader debate about the development and credibility of local referees across African football.
