Kebbi State To Sustain Environmental Sanitations Monthly

The monthly environmental sanitation exercise recently reintroduced by Kebbi State Government would be sustained to ensure clean environment and healthy living.

The Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Musa Muhammad Tungulawa gave the assurance while speaking to journalists shortly before embarking on a rally in major streets in Birnin Kebbi, to create awareness about the resuscitation of the sanitation exercise monthly.

The Commissioner together with the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, top management staff as well as other employees, staged ‘clean the streets’ rally around major roads in the state capital, Birnin was also accompanied by a Mobile Court with a Judge, fully ready to try violators of the sanitation law.

The Commissioner explained that,Governor Nasir Idris has introduced new innovation to the current exercise by placing premium on sensitisation and mobilisation of the inhabitants to imbibe the spirit of cleanliness prelude to envisaged prosecution of offenders.

“Governor Nasir Idris wants to complement the beautification of the structures in the state capital by mobilising the citizenry to keep and sustain clean environment”,

“We have allowed vehicular and human movement, taking into cognisance the present economic and security situation in the country, but we have made it mandatory that all households and shop owners must clean their premises as required”, the Commissioner announced.

He cautioned people against indiscriminate dumping of refuse particularly inside drainages which constitute an offence.

“The Ministry of Environment desires additional legislation that will compel all owners of houses, business premises and those building new homes, to demarcate certain portion of their abodes as private refuse dump without resorting to throwing refuse anywhere”, he said.

Musa Tungulawa indicated that the Ministry would work towards the enactment of such law.

It will be recalled that the reintroduced monthly environmental sanitation exercise in Kebbi State was flagged off by Governor Nasir Idris,last month and is now fully operational.
