Yobe State governor, Mai Mala Buni has assured of the state government’s continuous support to the Biomedical Research and Training Centre, BioRTC, in the search for solutions to the rampant cases of kidney disease in parts of the state.
The governor stated this yesterday in Damaturu when the Founder and Director of the centre, Professor Mahmoud Bukar, presented an interim report to him in his office.
Addressing the governor, Maina said 50 specialists across the world are involved in the research work, adding that BioRTC is currently hosting local and international participants in computational neuroscience at the fifth Summer School of the centre.
Professor Mahmoud, who is also an Honorary Special Adviser on Research and Innovation to the governor, said a research was conducted on 2,000 samples drawn from Bade and Damaturu Local Government Areas.
He explained that the initial result indicate high risk cases among fishermen in Bade Local Government.
He commended Governor Buni for sponsoring the largest state funded disease research project in Africa.
He said the second phase of the research would provide an indepth result to causes of the disease.
The director expressed optimism that the collaboration between the center and international research institutes across the world would provide the required results to tackle the menace of kidney disease in the state.
Earlier, Deputy Head of School and Life Science, University of Sussex, Professor Miguel Marravel commended Governor Buni for investing in research and training.
He assured that as international partners, they would support Yobe research center to find solutions to the rampant cases of kidney disease in the state.
