The late former President Muhammadu Buhari will be laid to rest on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State.
According to Governor Dikko Umaru Radda, who announced the funeral details during a press briefing on Monday, the former president’s remains will arrive by 12:00 noon, with burial rites scheduled for 2:00 p.m. in accordance with Islamic tradition.
Buhari passed away on Sunday at a London hospital following a prolonged illness, a development that has since triggered a wave of national mourning and tributes from all corners of Nigeria’s political, religious, and ethnic spectrum.
Governor Radda described the late president as a “national icon”, saying his legacy will remain deeply etched in the country’s political history.
“We pray Almighty Allah to grant his soul eternal rest and reward him with Aljannatul Firdaus,” he said.
“On behalf of the government and people of Katsina State, we extend heartfelt condolences to the Buhari family, to all Nigerians, and to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on this monumental loss.”
He further disclosed that the Katsina State Government, in collaboration with federal authorities and the Buhari family, is working to ensure a befitting and dignified farewell for the former Head of State.
President Buhari, born in Daura in 1942, first ruled Nigeria as a military leader from 1983 to 1985, and later returned as a democratically elected president in 2015, completing two terms before leaving office in 2023. Known for his austere lifestyle and fierce anti-corruption drive, Buhari was a towering figure in Nigerian politics for over four decades.
The final burial rites are expected to be attended by top government officials, diplomats, political leaders, traditional rulers, and dignitaries from across the world, in what is likely to be one of the most significant state funerals in Nigeria’s recent history.
