Ruben Amorim’s Tactics ‘Suited Me Perfectly’- Gyökeres

Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyökeres has credited former coach Ruben Amorim for his remarkable rise, saying the Portuguese manager’s tactical approach “suited me perfectly.”

The 27-year-old Swede, who is among Arsenal’s top targets this summer, enjoyed a sensational debut season under Amorim, scoring 29 league goals as Sporting won the 2023–24 Primeira Liga title—their first in 19 years. Gyökeres also finished the season as the league’s top scorer with 39 goals across all competitions, helping Sporting defend the title for the first time in 71 years.

Speaking to France Football, Gyökeres said, “The style of play we had under him suited me perfectly. We won two championships in a row—something the club hadn’t done in over seven decades. I can’t thank him enough.”

Amorim shocked many by leaving Sporting mid-season to join Manchester United, despite the club leading the league and still competing in the Champions League.

“It was a shock—I’ve never seen a coach leave when things were going so well. But I understand his decision. No hard feelings,” Gyökeres added.

Now expected to move to the Premier League, Gyökeres’ next destination remains uncertain, but his time under Amorim has clearly shaped his ascent into one of Europe’s most coveted strikers.
