The 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, is dead. The revered monarch passed away in the early hours of Monday, July 7, 2025, just two days after marking his 90th birthday.
Oba Olakulehin was officially installed as Olubadan on July 12, 2024, following his selection from the Balogun line of the traditional succession system. He succeeded the late Oba (Dr.) Moshood Lekan Balogun, Alli Okunmade II, who died on March 14, 2024, at the age of 81.
Before becoming Olubadan, Oba Olakulehin held the title of Balogun Olubadan—a senior chieftaincy position in the Ibadan traditional council. His ascension marked the continuation of the city’s unique rotational kingship system.
The late monarch was born on July 5, 1935, and his reign, though brief, was widely regarded as a period of wisdom and tradition.
Oba Olakulehin’s passing marks the end of another era in Ibadan’s rich cultural heritage, and preparations for the next Olubadan are expected to begin in accordance with custom.
