Army Day Celebration: COAS Reiterates Commitment To Welfare, National Security

FROM RAHILA ABDULLAHI, KADUNA

Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant-General Olufemi Oluyede has reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to prioritise soldiers welfare and professional development.

Speaking at the Nigerian Army Day celebration 2025 lecture on Saturday, Oluyede emphasised the importance of the ‘Soldier First’ concept in driving the army’s transformational drive.

“This concept focuses on prioritising the training, equipping and welfare of soldiers to enable them carry out their duties effectively.

“It also underscores the importance of responsive leadership, effective administration and merit-based promotion by prioritising soldiers welfare. The army aims to boost morale, resilience and collective effectiveness in fulfilling its mission,” Oluyode said.

Highlighting some key initiatives to be used in boosting the morale of soldiers, the COAS said they would promote a leadership style where commanders prioritise the needs of their subordinates and mission above personal gain.

“Quality housing, healthcare and family support system will also be provided to enhance soldiers welfare, as well as review the training curricula to reflect the requirements of today’s operating environment.

“Merit-based promotion, commendations and awards will be established to encourage excellence, hard work and loyalty within the ranks,” he added.

Emphasising the importance of empowering the junior leadership to develop a sense of responsibility and create a conducive environment where information flows freely between all levels of command, Oluyode said this would encourage soldiers to share ideas, concerns and constructive criticisms without fear of reprisal.

He said the army is committed to ensuring the security of the Nigerian people and preserving democracy, while  reaffirming its resolve to deny terrorists the opportunity to disrupt socio-cultural heritage or smear national sovereignty.

The Nigerian Army Day celebration 2025 featured various activities, including a lecture, military parade, equipment display and presentation of COAS Commendation Awards to deserving personnel.

The celebration aims to honour past and present officers and soldiers for their service to the nation.
