From HASSAN JIRGI, Damaturu
Former Minister of Police Affairs and member of the Board of Trustees, BOT, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Adamu Waziri has formally dumped the party and joined the African Democratic Congress, ADC.
Waziri announced his defection to the ADC in Gashua Local Government Area of Yobe State on Saturday.
The former PDP governorship candidate in Yobe State said his decision followed wide consultations and deep personal reflection, and not driven by personal ambition or anger, but by “love for our nation and concern for the hardship our people are facing daily.”
According to him, “Insecurity has taken over our homes, especially in the North East. Boko Haram, banditry, kidnappings and terrorism have become part of our lives, while government prioritises politics over the safety of its citizens.”
He decried the removal of oil subsidy and floating of the naira by President Bola Tinubu, which he said had taken Nigeria to the back seat with citizens suffering from one hardship to the other.
He expressed confidence that his new party has the wherewithal to wrestle power from the All Progressives Congress, APC, in 2027 and return Nigeria back to the part of economic recovery.
Waziri noted that the current economic hardship in the country is worrisome without any sign of improvement in sight.
He called on his supporters, including the youths, women and elderly people to join the new coalition in order to move the country forward.
“Now we are fully members of a party with the hope to change Nigeria in 2027,” he said.
AljazirahNigeria gathered that Waziri was appointed Minister of Police Affairs on April 6, 2010, when Goodluck Jonathan announced his new cabinet as acting president, following the incapacitation of late President Umaru Musa Yar’adua.
Waziri was governorship aspirant in Yobe State under the PDP in the 2007 elections.
During late President Umaru MusaYar’Adua’s administration, he was appointed Minister of State for Agriculture and Water Resources.
On October 29, 2008, he was dropped in a cabinet reshuffle.
Waziri was a member of the Good Governance Group led by Ken Nnamani that led the drive for the transfer of power from Yar’Adua to Jonathan, and was later appointed a member of the PDP Trustees.
