Boko Haram Attack: Yobe Govt Shuts 3 Weekly Markets

From HASSAN JIRGI Damaturu

Yobe State government has announced the temporary closure of three major weekly markets.

A statement signed by the Special Adviser on Security Matters to the governor, Brigadier-General Dahiru Abdulsalam (rtd), said the closure of the markets, which include Katarko, Kukareta and Buni Yadi in Gujba Local Government Area, was part of renewed efforts to consolidate the gains in the ongoing counter-insurgency operation across the state.

The statement added that the decision was taken for operational reasons to enable proactive engagement and enhance the security situation in the communities affected by the Boko Haram terrorists.

According to him, “This temporary measure became necessary to achieve set targets that will significantly improve the overall security landscape in the state.”

Abdulsalam urged the public to cooperate and support security agencies for the greater good of the state, while acknowledging the inconvenience it may cause.

“Efforts are ongoing to fast-track the operation and minimise the impact of the market closure on the livelihood of our citizens.

“We plead for your understanding in the collective interest of peace and security,” he added.

Government reassured residents that the markets will be reopened in the coming days once operational targets have been achieved.

Our correspondent reports that the closed markets are the biggest in Yobe State.

Speaking to newsmen over the development, a resident of Katarko village said they don’t know why the decision was taken and all they heard was that there was an order from above.

Another businessman in Damaturu town, who does want his name mentioned in print, said the military closed the markets on the allegation that the traders sell foodstuffs to terrorists.
