For nearly three decades, Makanjuola Nureni—popularly known as “Muala” (which means “let’s make it together”)—has quietly committed himself to the development of grassroots football in Nigeria. Working behind the scenes, he has mentored young talents, guided them to national recognition, and provided them with opportunities to escape poverty, all while instilling discipline and strong values.
Although much of his work has gone unnoticed by the public, many of the players nurtured under his watch have gone on to represent Nigeria at the FIFA World Cup, Africa Cup of Nations, and various youth tournaments around the world.
On June 20, 2025, Nureni’s years of selfless service finally received national recognition, as he was named among the 100 Most Influential Progressive Nigerians by Progressive Media. He was honoured alongside other distinguished personalities including the Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Usman Ododo; Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande; and the Director-General of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Salihu Abdulhamid Dembos.
Speaking after receiving the award, Nureni expressed appreciation for the honour and praised the organizers for a well-executed event.
“I’m truly impressed with the organization and, most importantly, the impressive turnout of awardees. It takes a great deal of effort to put together an event of this magnitude, and the organizers did an excellent job,” he said.
“As for the award—it was completely unexpected. I didn’t see it coming. But when I got the call, I felt deeply grateful. This recognition means a lot to me and to everyone committed to transforming grassroots football in Nigeria and creating life-changing opportunities for young people.”
His daughter, Oil of God Oluwanifemi Makanjuola, who attended the ceremony with other family members and friends, shared her pride in the moment.
“This is long overdue. My dad has done so much for grassroots football. Seeing him finally acknowledged like this is huge—not just for him, but for all the years of sacrifice and dedication he has poured into his work.”
The award stands as a major milestone in Makanjuola Nureni’s lifelong dedication to using football as a platform for youth empowerment and national development.
