From Henry Ibya, Makurdi
Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Senator George Akume has condemned the recent killing of over 200 farmers in Yelewata, Benue State, by gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen, describing it as “totally unjustifiable.”
Akume, who on arrival on Tuesday went to condole survivors of the attack, later visited Makurdi International Market emergency camp where Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, are taking refuge.
He presented relief materials to the survivors including a donation of N26million.
He said as leaders and peace advocates, himself and President Bola Tinubu were grieved over the tragic incident, being the reason why the president asked him to lead the advance team to console the people.
He urged the people of Benue to continue on the path of peace no matter the pains, expressing optimism that there would be light at the end of the tunnel.
The SGF stated that the president, as a lover of the country, had always demonstrated commitment to preserve unity, protect the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the nation.
He equally appreciated President Tinubu for demonstrating same love to Benue people by responding promptly to their distress calls.
He assured the people that the president would continue to show love to all Nigerians, especially in their moment of grief.
Akume commended security agencies and the Chief of Defense Staff, Chief of Army Staff and the Inspector General of Police for their swift response which restored relative peace.
